Government limits unaccompanied child asylum seekers

The government has announced a limit on the number of unaccompanied child asylum seekers that will be settled in different areas.

Currently, children arriving in the UK without parents or other carers are distributed around the country and the local authority in each area is given responsibility for their welfare.  A new scheme, due for introduction on 1 July, will limit this responsibility to 0.07 per cent of the under-18 population in their area.  Therefore a council with 100,000 children living within its region would have maximum responsibility for 70 unaccompanied children seeking asylum. Once this limit is reached, any additional underage asylum seekers found in the area will be transferred to other local authorities.

The Department for Education explained:

“The long-term objective of the transfer scheme is to achieve a fairer distribution of unaccompanied children through a scheme which is equitable and transparent, across all local authorities and all regions.”
