Guide to divorce finance for litigants in person

A guide to financial matters during divorce has been published by the Family Justice Council.
Sorting Out Finances on Divorce is aimed at litigants in person – people ending their marriages or civil partnerships without legal help. It provides a concise guide to relevant legislation and the divorce process and is aimed primarily at the general reader without legal experience.
The guide was produced in response to a 2014 recommendation by the Law Commission that the Council publish guidance on the issue.
Family Division President Sir James Munby explained:
“The objective in all cases is to achieve a result which reflects the best possible outcome for each family. In this context, the guide provides a general overview of the law, as well as a detailed explanation of particular issues which are likely to arise, such as maintenance, housing and pensions.”
The Family Justice Council is a legal advisory body sponsored by the Ministry of Justice.
