The senior partner at Stowe Family Law, Marilyn Stowe is one of Britain’s best known divorce lawyers with clients throughout the country, in Europe, the Far East and the USA. A proud citizen of Leeds, (and a supporter of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club since the age of 7!) she was educated at Leeds Girls’ High School and then achieved one of the highest degrees awarded in her year at the University of Leeds.
With more than 25 years of experience handling divorce cases and family law proceedings, Marilyn is “regarded as one of the most formidable and sought after divorce lawyers in the UK”. She is highly skilled at uncovering attempts to disguise wealth and hide assets, ensuring everything is taken into consideration in reaching a settlement. Her particular speciality is conducting investigations in cases where substantial assets are in dispute.
Marilyn also achieved prominence in uncovering previously undisclosed medical evidence that was a critical element in securing the freeing from prison of Sally Clark, the mother wrongly jailed for life for the murders of her two infant sons. It was a case that she took completely on a ‘pro bono’ basis after being moved by the plight of a woman who was a fellow mother and lawyer.
Marilyn is regularly asked to write articles and give interviews to regional and national newspapers and magazines, and writes a monthly column called “Family Business” for Solicitors Journal. She also blogs about family law for The Times, as one of the six top-name lawyers who together are known as The Experts.
She also appears frequently on live television broadcast worldwide for the BBC and Sky TV and the BBC uses her expert insight for discussion and phone-in advice programs across its regional radio network in Yorkshire and Humberside. She is the author of two books: `Divorce -a New Beginning’, published in 1993 and ‘No Looking Back’ published in 2002. Both are aimed at helping readers understand their rights in divorce and how best to build a new life afterwards.
Marilyn held the nationally important post of Chief Assessor and Chief Examiner of the Law Society’s Family Law Panel for seven years after it was launched in 1998. She was also appointed Chief Assessor and Chief Examiner of the Advanced Tier of the Law Society’s Family law Panel in 2001 and remains a member of the Panel’s Technical Board. Marilyn has lectured on English Law at the University of Le Mans, France and is a member of the International Bar Association as she has a keen interest in human rights internationally.
Marilyn is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. This is a worldwide association of practicing lawyers who are recognized by their peers as the most expert and experienced family lawyers of their respective countries. Membership is by invitation only.
Marilyn Stowe is also recognized by the Legal 500 Series, an independent and definitive guide to the legal market in over 70 countries as “a high profile divorce practitioner renowned for the energy she expends on behalf of clients”.
