500 new child protection investigations a day

family life

Councils launched more than 500 new child welfare investigations a day last year according to new figures from the Local Government Association (LGA).

The organisation represents 370 English and Welsh councils. it contrasts the figure with the situation ten years ago, when an average of just 200 investigations  a day were launched.

LGA Chair Richard Watts said that, thanks to the surge in cases, which has resulted in around 90 children a day entering the care system, resources were being stretched to breaking point.

“It is alarming that councils are having to undertake around 300 more investigations every day than this time 10 years ago. By 2020, our children’s services departments will be facing a funding gap of £2 billion,” he insisted.

And yet, he added, the government announced no additional funding for children’s services in last month’s budget.

“The Government has been warned repeatedly that ongoing funding cuts have left councils struggling to provide the support that vulnerable children and families need.”

Mr Watts claimed that a decisive majority of councils around the country deliberately overspent their child protection budgets last year to “ensure children at immediate risk of harm were protected”.

is this the real reason why we cannot get courts to refer cases to public law under Ss31 – 40?

if there is no money to fund egregious physical and sexual abuse cases, what chance is there of getting PA recognised as an equivalent harm and getting it acted on? Mental scars go just as deep as physical ones.

The facts of some of the worst PA cases amount to ‘significant’ harm for the purpose of the Act. But these cases are ignored. And even if public law involvement can be secured, what qualifications have social workers got to start addressing the brainwashing of the child and starting to undo it?

Why do Local authorities spend zero on helping to keep families together rather than fortunes on dismantling them. well thats simple. breaking up families makes big money.

Fully agree with how public monies are directed elsewhere instead of prevention measures. The numbers seem to be a reason for councils asking for funding for sw jobs. Real change has to be from Government and powers that be. The courts are jam packed as well and it seems like there are good opportunities for family lawyers to cash in on these high numbers. Unfortunately restrictions on legal aid, it’s the child that really suffers from the mismanagement of council funds. There really shouldn’t be a need for judicial reviews etc. as there are easy learnt options for public authorities. The other day, the police and council were criticised for institutional racism.

Thank you Samantha,
theres nothing wrong with wishing each other Seasons Greetings while the battle goes on. every parents who puts up a fight for their stolen children should feel proud and for many i know one day your children will tell you that.
the one thing you certainly should Celebrate is the fact that you are alive each day with Air in your Lungs and strength in your heart to speak out against the injustices.
My message to all Parents is Stay strong, Focus on the love you have for your children and never give up the fight. together we are sewing the seeds to reap a better world for our children and for us all.
Best Wishes,
Dr M.

I have 3 grandchildren in care system and I’ve been fighting to have them given to me where they should be . I didn’t get a chance because of deliberate lies written in a report about me and shown to the judge . This system needs a serious investigation . Totally corrupt .
