Lady Hale was formally sworn in as the new President of the Supreme Court yesterday.
Sir Ian Burnett became the youngest Lord Chief Justice for 50 years during the same event, replacing the newly retired Lord Thomas.
Lady Hale succeeds Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, with whom she had served as Deputy President for four years. She is the first ever female President and until yesterday was the only woman ever to have sat on the Supreme Court.
But Lady Justice Hale has now been joined by veteran family law judge Lady Justice Black, who was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court at the same event yesterday.
New Deputy President Lord Mance, Lord Justice Briggs and Lord Justice Lloyd Jones also took their oaths of office yesterday.
The various ceremonies were livestreamed over the Internet, and are now available to view on both YouTube and the Supreme Court’s own website.
