The Labour Party has appointed a former Coronation Street actress to the role of shadow childcare minister.
Tracey Brabin appeared on the iconic TV soap between 1994 and 1997 and went on to enjoy a successful career as a TV, film and theatre actress. She also became a scriptwriter for several other TV soaps.
In October last year Brabin was elected Labour MP for Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire, following the murder of sitting MP Jo Cox by a disturbed local man in June.
The 56 year’s new role means she will in office when the government’s much discussed extension of free childcare hours begins in September.
Writing on Twitter following the appointment she said she was “so proud” to have been given the role.
The announcement was welcomed cautiously by key figures in the profession. Neil Leitch of the Pre-school Learning Alliance said:
“With the introduction of the 30-hours entitlement offer only a few short months away, it is essential that there is a strong opposition ready to hold the government to account.”
