Runaway mother ‘gave children sedatives’

A 40 year-old mother who vanished with her two children during court proceedings gave them sedatives, a Judge has explained.
Samantha Baldwin had accused the father of sexually abusing their sons, a claim he vehemently denied. Contact was stopped, however, as a matter of routine while the claims were investigated. In February of this year, a 12 day fact-finding hearing at a family court formally exonerated the father.
Then on March 27, while Judge Jeremy Lea delivered his verdict, the mother suddenly left the court and disappeared with the two boys, aged six and nine. They were not found until 6 April, staying a holiday cabin near Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.
Her disappearance generated “ill-informed speculation” a nd Judge Lea has now issued a statement explaining the circumstances via Nottingham Magistrates Court. He explained that:
“In my judgement I found that the father had not perpetrated sexual, physical or emotional abuse against the boys as alleged by the mother, or at all, that the allegations made by the mother were false.”
The mother had “genuinely” believed the claims he continued, but she was irrational and the evidence “unreliable”.
In trying to demonstrate her belief to the court, Judge Lea explained, Baldwin had given them “substances that would give rise to a positive testing for benzodiazepine products and zolpidem”.
Benzodiazepine and zolpidem are pharmaceutical sedatives.
To assist Police enquries during the ten day search the Judge authorised the release of the family’s names.
Following the Judge’s ruling, the boys’ father said:
“My reputation and that of my family and friends has been wrongly and unfairly tarnished with the most distressing and false allegations. The effect of this on [my sons] however, has been much greater.”
Samantha Baldwin was arrested on suspicion of abduction, the BBC reports, but has since been released on bail. Her sons are currently living with foster carers on a temporary basis.
