Family Court Fees to Rise

March 28, 2024

This morning, Marilyn Stowe appeared on Radio Verulam in St Albans, where Stowe Family Law has one of its offices. She was asked a series of questions on a range of family law topics from the station’s listeners.

The first of which came from a woman whose husband was having an affair, although she couldn’t prove it. She said that she felt trapped by the situation due to the tight grip her husband had over the couple’s finances.

Another listener claimed she was in a rather unusual situation with her former long-term boyfriend. He had separated from his wife many years ago and now wanted her to cover his child maintenance payments. This was because she had not paid anything towards the mortgage on the house they lived in for more than a decade while together.

One question came from a man who admitted that both he and his fiancée had criminal records. He wondered if this would legally prevent them from marrying.

Mrs Stowe also heard from a man who wanted to divorce his wife. Apparently, the man’s spouse had a property portfolio which stretched across Europe, substantial shares and a significant amount of money in a savings account. The husband wanted to know if he would be able to claim half of these assets should they divorce. He also asked if he would be required to declare his own assets.

The final question came from a man who wanted to marry his girlfriend in Las Vegas. Not only that, the couple wanted an ‘Elvis wedding’. He was curious if such ceremonies are legally recognised in the United States and the United Kingdom.

This was a great listen. Makes the things I’m going through seem less alien! Generally speaking, when I got a solicitor on board things were a lot more straight forward, just wasn’t easy finding one. If theres any other listeners like me, Marilyn is a great source of info and compare the law was a great online tool. Both of these got me going on the good path. Fingers crossed it ends well!
