Divorce cakes cause stir on social media

Cakes celebrating divorce are the latest marital fashion on popular photo sharing app Instagram.

The so called ‘divorce selfie’ became popular on the network last year. Newly divorced former couples posted self-portraits taken outside family courts, accompanied by positive messages expressing affection and respect for their ex-spouse.

Now cakes made to celebrate just completed divorces have caught the imagination of an increasing number of Instagrammers, the Mail reports. Amongst the hundreds of shots marked with the hashtag #divorcecake, some take a playful but grotesque tone, with wedding toppers pushing each other off the top of the cake, boxing or appearing to dig a grave. Some compare divorcing a man to ‘taking out the garbage’. But others are simpler and more upbeat, with straightforward declarations in icing, such as I do, I did, I’m done, and Don’t worry, be happy, you’re divorced.

One cake featured a doll holding a placard with the slogan ‘Finally I’m free’. The divorcee in question wrote:

“Because when things are that bad & your divorce papers arrive, celebration is a must!”
