Caribbean radio station gives away free divorce

A Caribbean radio station chose to mark Valentine’s Day this year by offering listeners the chance to win a free divorce.

Station Z99 operates on Grand Cayman, largest of the three Cayman Islands near Cuba, all of which are British Overseas Territories. DJ Jason Howard, host of the Breakfast Buzz show, asked readers interested in a cost-free divorce to send in their stories.

Mr Howard admitted that the competition had been inspired by the fact he is currently going through a divorce himself. He told the Cayman Compass:

“We’ve done kind of anti-Valentine’s stuff before but nothing like this.”

The station received a “shocking” number of entries, the DJ reported. Some were “cute and optimistic” but others had been thoroughly in earnest.

After careful consideration, the station selected a winner they felt would genuinely benefit from the prize, but chose to keep her identity a secret.

Mr Howard told the Compass:

“The woman had gotten married very young and they had kids and rushed to get married. She was from Europe, he was Caymanian … they just weren’t working.”

The woman was now struggling financially and in need of a fresh start, he explained.

The DJ admitted that divorce was a sensitive topic on the island, but insisted that the end of a marriage needn’t be a wholly negative experience.

“The end of it all is also the beginning.”
