The benefits of exercise during divorce

Marilyn Stowe’s latest book – Divorce & Splitting Up: Advice from a Top Divorce Lawyer – is now in its second edition. It provides a detailed guide to all aspects of the divorce process and provides expert advice on matters ranging from the legal to the personal.
In this extract, she looks at the importance of staying physically active during a divorce. It is more important than you may imagine.
Physical and emotional wellbeing are essential to a healthy divorce. The Mental Health Foundation stresses the benefits of exercise for mild to moderate depression. I tell all my clients: your body is your temple. Get into shape. Exercise, exercise, exercise!
What do you like doing? Salsa dancing? Going to the gym? Cycling? Running? Swimming? Do anything that will get your heart rate pumping. You will feel better immediately.
I do not advise exercising on your own. It is all too easy to make an excuse and not bother. Instead, find a local group (a running club, perhaps), join a class or get a trainer. That way you have to join in and the habit soon begins to form. If you can’t afford it, can you cut back on some other expenses? Of course, if you have a good lawyer, you may be able to get the cost of your workouts added into your maintenance!
One day you think, “I need a new hair cut”. Another day you notice that your clothes are better-fitting. Gradually, but certainly within a few months, you will feel and become a different person. Your workouts will have a tremendous effect on your body, mind and spirit.
A new beginning begins with a new you.
