New Children’s Commissioner formally appointed

Anne Longfield OBE has been formally appointed to the role of Children’s Commissioner.

The Chief Executive of family charity 4Children was named preferred candidate for the role earlier this month, and her appointment has now been confirmed by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan. She will succeed current Children’s Commissioner Maggie Atkinson in March next year.

The Education Secretary said:

“I am delighted to appoint Anne to the role, and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Maggie for all her hard work over the last 4 years.”

The Tory MP for Loughborough added:

“Anne has shown relentless dedication and drive to improving the lives of children and young people during a career spanning over 30 years.”

Anne Longfield said she was “delighted and hugely privileged” by the appointment. Her career in the voluntary sector includes more than 20 years as chief executive of the children’s charity, along with a period working in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit at the Cabinet Office. She received an OBE in 2000 for her work with children.

The Children’s Commissioner for England works to promote the rights and interests of children under the age of 18 as well care leavers up the age of 18.
