Brazilian judge registers 2 mothers in same sex marriage

A Brazilian court has approved the registration of a baby with three official parents.

A judge in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul allowed the alteration of the baby’s birth certificate to include a second mother – the biological mother’s female partner. This is the first time such a ruling has been made in Brazil.

The women married earlier this year and they asked a male a friend to father a child with them. All three asked the courts to change the birth certificate, the BBC reports.

Judge Rafael Pagon Cunha told

“Being a father and a mother is above all about taking care and fulfilling tasks. I feel sure that for this child the possibility of happiness will be very great.”

As a result of the change, the unnamed baby’s birth certificate now also lists six grandparents.

In June last year, a Brazilian woman living in England won legal recognition for her adoption of two children from the country.
