Dawn French: divorce from Lenny Henry was “sad”

Dawn French has recalled her divorce three years ago from fellow comedian Lenny Henry, saying it was it was “a bit sad, a bit of a shame”.
The veteran performer and writer married her former husband in October 1984 after meeting him on the alternative comedy circuit in the early 1980s. They adopted a daughter, Billie, but eventually went their separate ways and divorced in 2010.
Talking to Australian TV show A Current Affair, French recalled:
“I was with Lenny for 30 years, we were married for 25. I would say that 24.5 of those years were great, so nothing to regret there.. [It was] a bit tricky there at the end, a bit sad, bit of a shame. But the ending of it was a tribute to the way it had always been – with a great kindness and massive respect for each other.”
The couple were determined to take a positive approach to the split because of their daughter, she said.
“Everything that needed to be said was said behind closed doors – loudly and fuelled by alcohol. [We] had to empty the knapsack out so both of us can start again in a good way and support each other even through the next bit. We started as friends and that’s how we finished it.”
French has since married Mark Bignell.
She is currently appearing as a judge on reality show Australia’s Got Talent.
