Red shoesUS states which allow gay marriage have a lower divorce rate than those which do not, according to TV station NBC 5.

The average divorce rate in the pro-gay marriage states is 20 per cent lower, the station claims after analysing data from the US Census Bureau. Massachusetts has the lowest average divorce rate of any state – just 2.2 divorces per 1,000 people. It was also the first state to legalise same sex marriage, in 2004, becoming only the sixth jurisdiction in the entire world to do so. The second lowest is Iowa, with only 2.4 divorces for every 1,000 people.

According to the station, all 15 of the states with the highest divorce rates in the United States currently ban gay marriage. Top of that particular list is Nevada, with a hefty 6.7 divorces per 1,000 people.

The average divorce rate in the 13 states which now allow gay marriage is 3.1 per 1,000. compared to 3.9 in the other states.

Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50. Healthy marriages are good for couples’ mental and physical health.
