US states which allow gay marriage ‘have lower divorce rates’
The average divorce rate in the pro-gay marriage states is 20 per cent lower, the station claims after analysing data from the US Census Bureau. Massachusetts has the lowest average divorce rate of any state – just 2.2 divorces per 1,000 people. It was also the first state to legalise same sex marriage, in 2004, becoming only the sixth jurisdiction in the entire world to do so. The divorce rate in Massachusetts has dropped in the nine years since.
The second lowest is Iowa, with only 2.4 divorces for every 1,000 people.
According to the station, all 15 of the states with the highest divorce rates in the United States currently ban gay marriage. Top of that particular list is Nevada, with a hefty 6.7 divorces per 1,000 people.
The average divorce rate in the 13 states which now allow gay marriage is 3.1 per 1,000. compared to 3.9 in the other states.
