News: Rupert Murdoch to divorce Wendi Deng

News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from his third wife.

The 82 year-old media tycoon married Wendi Deng in 1999, just 17 days after his completing his divorce from second wife Anna Torv.

Now his third marriage has come to end. According to a Reuters report, Murdoch’s marriage to 44 year-old Deng has been “irretrievably broken” for more than six months.

Forbes, meanwhile, claims that Rupert Murdoch is worth $11.2 billion. It follows that, unless the reported prenuptial agreement is watertight , his divorce from Wendi Deng after two children and a 14-year marriage could produce one of the world’s highest divorce settlements.

What Wendi Deng walks away with will depend upon a number of factors, not least where the divorce takes place. However, it is a given that she will remain a wealthy woman. I expect that, as with Rupert Murdoch’s second divorcé, a suitable settlement will be agreed upon in private and the children of the marriage will want for nothing. Their two daughters already have financial shares in the Murdoch family trust, which includes most of the family assets and is key to the control of News Corporation.

Among the over-60s the divorce rate continues to rise rapidly: in England and Wales. It was up 58 per cent in 2012 compared with 2011. The trend even has a name –  “silver divorce”. Rupert Murdoch is a serial silver divorcee: he divorced his second wife after an impressive 32-year marriage when he was 67. Their $1.2 billion settlement set records.

Now he is 82 and has filed for divorce from his third wife after 14 years.

These days, people no longer wish to sail through their sunset years sitting in an armchair. They want to enjoy themselves, making the most of the time they have left by doing what they love best.

We don’t yet know why Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from Wendi Deng, but his second divorce was rumoured to have been sparked by his unwillingness to bend to his wife’s wish that he slow down. According to one report, he decided that he would rather divorce than retire. Perhaps the same fate has befallen Rupert Murdoch’s third marriage?

Of course one has to wonder how did these two who are in their own right magic pieces of work (and not magic in the benign Sunday afternoon charming way) finally come to implode and grate on each other…?

Then again perhaps the right question might be why did it take so long in the first place….?

I figure they are both pretty wilful so it is not that surprising – it’ll be interesting to see if she contests the pre-nup – I suspect that’ll depend on the generosity of the payoff that is arranged within it.
