Russell Brand ponders marriage, divorce and fame
Comedian Russell Brand has described his 14 month marriage to pop singer Katy Perry as mostly “brilliant”.
Speaking to Sbortlist magazine, the 37 year old presenter and occasional actor said his divorce from Perry, finalised in July last year, had not put him off marrying again.
“I liked marriage. Most of it was brilliant. You can’t condemn an institution on one incident. You can’t condemn the whole Catholic Church for a few dodgy priests.”
But Perry’s fame and their subsequent divorce had made him re-evaluate the need for privacy. He told the interviewer:
“I feel different about my private life. I feel like I need to have one now. If you’re married to someone who’s also famous, privacy becomes a commodity. But….that’s not really a problem in a world where people are starving. My attitude to fame and celebrity changes continually.”
Brand says he is regularly heckled at his live shows about his marriage to Perry.
“People shout “[Inaudible mumbling] Katy Perry!” Yeah, it’s horrible. But you’ve got to be a big boy if you’re standing on stage in front of 10,000 people and you’ve taken 50 quid off each of them. They should shout what they want.”
Meanwhile, reality TV star Kim Kardashian has reportedly filed for an “emergency divorce” in an effort to end the continuing legal battle surrounding her 72 day marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries. She is currently pregnant with a child by rapper Kanye West.
According to a report in People magazine, the divorce filing reads in part:
“I do not want to be married to [Kris Humphries] when I have my baby. I am requesting the status of my marriage be determined for now for not only my health and welfare but also for the health and well-being of my unborn child.”
