News: US singer discusses child custody victory
US R&B singer and actor Usher has spoken on national television about his recent success in a child custody dispute with ex-wife Tameka Foster.
The 33-year old performer was awarded primary custody of the couple’s two sons – four-year old Ussher Raymond V and three-year old Naviyd Ely Raymond – on August 24.
During lengthy proceedings, Foster had accused Usher of being too absorbed in his career and of using drugs while his sons were present.
He, meanwhile, accused her of being unstable and irresponsible.
Speaking on chat show Oprah’s Next Chapter, Usher said: “The friend that I was to Tameka, I don’t know that I could ever be again, because I really felt like we were friends. She made us enemies in a way that I could never understood. It wasn’t until I was on the stand, where I cried, when I realized, ‘Oh, this is an attack.’ ”
At one point during the custody proceedings, Usher was held in contempt of court for cancelling his former wife’s credit card for Saks Fifth Avenue and was ordered to restore this.
Usher – born Usher Raymond IV – and 41-year old Foster were divorced in November 2009, after two years and three months of marriage. Foster has two other children from previous relationships. A fifth child, Kile, was killed in a jet ski accident in July.
Usher has sold more than 65 million records worldwide.
