Saturday, which came hot on the heels of a hectic week, was worth waiting for. The sky was blue and the sunshine was glorious. We were back at York Races, for the annual Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup. I always enjoy supporting race days in Yorkshire. I’m a Yorkshire lass and it makes me proud that we can put on some cracking races and show that we’re just as good as the posh people at Ascot!

The race, won by Caracciola in a thrilling finish, had the thirty thousand strong crowd roaring. I presented the trophy to winning owner Piers Pottinger (above). We had a good chat because his ageing horse had beaten off a very strong and much fancied challenger from the Emir of Dubai’s stable. Then I got to catch up with several friends and acquaintances. Best bit: I also had a chat with the Channel 4 racing commentator Derek Thompson, after he spotted me standing about in the parade ring, with one shoe on and one shoe off because of my knee operation! I told him that I had stopped running, was now on my bike and had cycled 12 miles before leaving for the races. He told the viewers that I am very fit, and made me laugh.  What a nice guy! Overall, it proved to be a perfect day on which to unwind and relax.

Yet again, the week is shaping up to be a busy one. Perhaps another fabulous day at the races is in order?

Postscript: All credit to Caracciola whose win now means he is to race in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.
